The Seven Sacred Teachings: Embracing Indigenous Wisdom

The Seven Sacred Teachings, also known as the Seven Sacred Laws, are integral to our philosophy and designs. At Shining Bear Designs, we honour the profound wisdom of Indigenous cultures through our Wearable Teachings. These teachings act as our foundation, guiding the relationship we have with the land and each other.

    Overview of the Seven Teachings

The Seven Teachings, represented by seven sacred animals, guide Indigenous peoples in living a balanced and respectful life. These teachings are made for everyone, Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike, to encourage collaboration and the restoration of our culture, lives, and beliefs. Embrace these teachings and learn to walk softly with Mother Earth and all her creations.

    Detailed Exploration of Each Teaching

    Teaching 1: Respect

The Buffalo walks with you to teach you the "Law of Respect." It is all about giving and sharing, one of the biggest secrets to a good life. The Buffalo gives us every part of his physical being to provide food and clothing to use in our life. The hide is used for the sacred drum to carry our hopes and prayers. Give yourself to your fellow man, being a model and example of the "Seven Sacred Laws." We must "give and share for a good life."

    Teaching 2: Honesty

The Sabe, or Bigfoot to some, brings the "Law of Honesty." Always be honest with yourself and your fellow man. You must speak from your heart and be honest with who you are, whatever you speak, but always with kindness for all creations. Be true to yourself in following the laws you have learned. The more honest you are, the taller you will become as the Sabe has. The Sabe will always be watching and there to help you. “Live and speak truth from your heart”

    Teaching 3: Courage

The Bear, “Makwa” in Ojibwe brings the "Law of Courage";  “Courage when needed” to get through the hard things in life. The Bear brings the courage needed to overcome your fears, live your true spirit, and face the evil you find on Turtle Island. Walking in courage is to do the right thing—take the high moral road. We all need courage to live our true spirit.

    Teaching 4: Humility

Represented by the Wolf, the "Law of Humility" teaches that we are all equal. Show gratitude for the life we received, never overstepping the natural laws of Mother Earth. To show Humility is to know no one is ever above or below ourselves; we are all equal in the eyes of the Great Spirit. "Be Humble, Be Kind."

    Teaching 5: Love

The Eagle, the messenger for Love, brings the "Law of Love." It is the essence of the creator and the shining blue light that is in all creations. Our own spirit is filled with this love. Mother Earth is filled with this life-giving love, giving all we need to survive. Return this love to her by “first loving yourself and who you are”; it will heal your spirit. Every act of kindness and love will change our universe and world. Will you be the change?

    Teaching 6: Wisdom

Wisdom is embodied by the Beaver, a symbol of ingenuity and determination. Wisdom goes beyond mere knowledge; it encompasses the insight gained through experience and reflection. The Beaver teaches us the value of hard work and the importance of building strong foundations. Just as the Beaver constructs its lodge with care and precision, we must approach our lives with thoughtfulness and integrity. Wisdom is about knowing when to act and when to listen, recognizing that every action has a ripple effect on our community and the environment. It is the application of knowledge through a lens of compassion and responsibility, ensuring that our decisions benefit not only ourselves but also those around us.

Wisdom is knowing your gifts and using them to serve your fellow human beings. Living your gifts will define your identity and purpose in life. Your gifts are to help build a world connected to the Laws we have brought , to bring peace and balance. If you know Wisdom you know yourself. If you do not use your gifts, like the Beaver does, it will affect your health and life. Stay true to your identity and gifts given to you. Bring your gifts forward, and “Use your gifts for a peaceful world”

    Teaching 7: Truth

Truth is symbolized by the Turtle, a creature revered for its longevity and stability. The Turtle teaches us that truth is timeless and unwavering. Just as the Turtle's shell represents protection and perseverance, truth provides a foundation upon which we build our lives. Truth is about being honest with oneself and others, living authentically, and adhering to one's principles regardless of external pressures. The Turtle's shell, with its thirteen plates, symbolizes the thirteen moons in a year, reminding us of the cyclical nature of truth and its presence in the natural world. Embracing truth means embracing the constancy of natural laws and the principles that govern our existence, guiding us to live in harmony with the world around us.

To live Truth is living all the Seven Sacred Laws that are given to us. There is so much suffering today because the people have forgotten the Laws and are walking another path that has taken them into darkness. When the human beings begin walking with the Seven Sacred Laws, then there will be peace. As our Ancestors lived, we shall live a “Minopimatiziwin” a good life!!!!
